What is TALA?

TALA is an original play written by Lakas Pagtakhan, inspired by true events and influenced by the complex dynamics that can exist in Filipino American families.

Originally starting out in 2025 as a journaling activity to explore concepts like kapwa and lakas ng loob, the first iteration of TALA was later submitted into the raffle for Z Fringe Festival 2026 as a Main Stage production.

Once making a raffle slot for 1 hr 20 min of stage time, Lakas quickly reached out to their network of Filipino locals and put together a cast, crew, and a final script.

What is Z Fringe?

Every year, Zeiders American Dream Theater hosts a 3-day festival called Z Fringe, granting artists the opportunity to produce a one-time, staged production of original works. The festival includes original plays, musicals, visual art installations, and dance performances.

The main goal of performing TALA at Z Fringe 2026 is not only to provide the playwright with a chance to workshop their piece, but also to provide the Hampton Roads community with the second Filipino-centered play produced in the area.

Who is involved?

Our production team and cast include Filipino Americans local to Hampton Roads, from Hampton to Virginia Beach.

When putting our team together for this first staged production of TALA, we wanted to ensure that (1) our Filipino characters are played by Filipino actors, and (2) cast list will include folks of varying levels of theatre experience, providing new opportunities for Filipino artists to perform on stage.
